Baker—Hall is pleased to announce Addison Wolff’s solo exhibition, entitled ‘lOOking’. The exhibition will mark the debut of our new location in Allapattah, located at 1294 NW 29th Street, and will be on view January 4th through February 8th, 2025, with an opening reception on Saturday, January 4th, from 6 to 9 PM.

Addison Wolff’s practice explores themes of self-identity and sexuality through hand-built ceramic sculptures as well as paintings. Known for his use of expressive broken color, Wolff’s work captures natural and urban environments, while examining the passage of time and the interplay between materiality and form. The exhibition, ‘lOOking’, highlights two distinct yet interconnected bodies of work: his ceramics and paintings. Together, these works engage in a dialogue of transformation, transcendence, and the fluidity of identity.

Wolff’s ceramic sculptures are constructed through slab-coil techniques, embracing material entropy and gravity. These bisque-fired forms, often shaped as large tubular structures, emphasize the void within the mass, synthesizing elements of stasis and flux. The works incorporate queer aesthetics and materials, such as 501 jeans and hankies, along with the artist’s hand in layering synthetic polymer paints. These textural surfaces serve as palimpsests, recording the evolution of self-expression and authenticity. The sculptures, positioned at the intersection of painting and sculpture, present a compelling tension between mass and space, distinct and optical color, and light and shadow.

Wolff’s paintings further expand on his exploration of identity through processes of accumulation, erasure, and framing. Linear mark-making, built up through layered lines of color, reveals a phantasmagoria of past and present self-expressions. The use of pentimenti and moiré effects creates perceptual depth within a shifting, multiplanar field. Each painting is framed with raised polygonal shapes made from a mixture of synthetic polymer and sand, applied using spackle knives and custom stencils. These impasto sections add sculptural elements to the works, complicating figure-ground relationships and lending the paintings an object-like quality that counters their optical depth. The interplay of graphic foregrounds and linear backgrounds creates a dynamic tension between stasis and flux, line and form, and depth and surface.

About Addison Wolff

Addison Wolff’s  practice explores self-identity and sexuality through the creation of hand-built ceramic sculptures rendered in expressive broken color, recording natural and urban environments, time, and place. Utilizing slab-coil ceramic construction and acquiescing to material entropy and gravity, these objects are an amalgamation of large tubes emphasizing the void of the mass. Employing queer aesthetics and materials (e.g., 501 jeans, hankies), along with the hand of the maker in the layering of textural synthetic polymer paints, these bisque-fired ceramic objects act as a palimpsest, recording the evolution of an individual’s journey to authenticity. Overall, his work seeks to create a dialogue on transformation, transcendence, fluidity, time, and cultural objects—disturbing personal perception while emphasizing the interiority of oneself.

These pieces synthesize contradictory elements of mass and space; stasis and flux; painting and sculpture; art and craft; distinct and optical color; light and shadow.
