Alissa Alfonso & Emma Ortiz: Bloom

Club is thrilled to announce Bloom, a joint art exhibition featuring the work of Miami based textile artist Alissa Alfonso and oil painter Emma Ortiz. The show will be on display from May 20 to June 17, 2023, with an opening reception on Saturday, May 20th, from 6—9 pm.

Alfonso’s soft sculptures celebrate the beauty and resilience of nature, while also calling attention to the harm that humans have caused to the environment. Her Nature’s Medicine series, made from repurposed found objects, reflects the abundance and waste characteristic of modern life. She meticulously crafts from textile remnants and hand-dyed fabrics to evoke the essence of medicinal plants, fungi, and botanicals.

Ortiz’s oil paintings are inspired by the natural world, and tell the story of a newfound spring. Each canvas serves as a personal diary entry capturing the artist’s moods and reflections on the world around her. Ortiz draws on a wide range of sources, from textiles and magazines to family lineage and most of all, flowers. She creates an ever-expanding repository of imagery that she uses to paint motifs from nature and imagination.

Together, Alfonso and Ortiz’s works capture the ephemeral beauty of the present moment, while also serving as a reminder of the importance of protecting and nurturing the natural world around us. Bloom promises to be an immersive and enchanting experience, inspired by the alluring and captivating floral world that surrounds us.

About Alissa Alfonso & Emma Ortiz

Alissa Alfonso creates beautiful objects that repurpose the past in order to speak to the future. A talented and curious visual artist, Alfonso is an old soul devoted to preserving the natural world as well as a mother of three, a collector of vintage Asian kitsch, a children’s clothing designer, a self-proclaimed trash-picker, and a master of DIY décor. Her projects often seek to involve other artists and members of her community, reflecting an awareness of social ecosystems that echoes her love for nature. She works from her home studio inside the light-filled,1937 art deco house she and her husband renovated in Hollywood, Florida, dying fabrics for her art in the cottage out back. Her deep love for environment and community is evident in everything she does, from botanical soft sculptures modeled after healing plants and made from upcycled, hand-dyed fabrics to her work developing an entirely green, “alternative” art program in Broward County schools.

Emma Ortiz is an artist born and based in Miami. After receiving her BFA at Parsons School of Design, she moved back home and began painting orchids in the backyard as studies. These studies evolved into a practice in which she treats each piece as a diary entry, referencing matters of nature and images from imagination. With a deep awareness of the present moment and creating work intuitively, Emma uses oil paint to tell stories of mood, connection and trusting yourself. Emma has spent the last four years working with private collectors, galleries and has partnered with companies such as Anthropologie and Sweetgreen to further share her voice.
